WHAT HAPPENED TO US?

MINISTRY OF PUBLIC WORKS. BUENOS AIRES PROVINCE.

Navigation Channel Project from Mar Chiquita (Junín) to the Baradero River (San Pedro). Memory and background. La Plata. Museum Publications Workshops. 1903.

Quarto (26.2 x 17 cm), front cover and title page, 104 pp., plus two folded planes. Original binding in full cloth with its front cover embossed and gilded. Specimen in very good condition.

At the request of the provincial governor, Marcelino Ugarte, the then Minister of Public Works of Buenos Aires, gives him the study carried out by the Department of Engineers of the Province, whose technical opinion supports "the practicability of a navigation channel 308 kilometers long with its annexes and overseas ports”.

A first reading could make us think that this channel sought to avoid the chronic floods suffered in the province, but no. In the will of the provincial government was the plan to channel the Arrecifes river, from the Mar Chiquita lagoon, to its mouth in Baradero, in order to use it as a waterway to facilitate the movement of industrial production, natural and agricultural wealth, considerably reducing freight.
