Son of the patriot of the May Revolution of the same name, Mariano Moreno (1805 - 1876), military man and engineer, participated in the Battle of Ituzaingó -decorated with a shield and silver cord-, and reached the rank of lieutenant colonel, but being a Unitarian, after being arrested and sentenced, he managed to emigrate to Montevideo. He installed a drawing school and was the author of the portrait of Manuel Belgrano that was lithographed by Juan Bautista Douville. After Caseros returned to Buenos Aires, he was secretary of the Public Works Council, municipal engineer and shortly after vice president of the Topographical Department. He was also a professor of mathematics at the University of Buenos Aires. This booklet was written in compliance with this teaching function. Later he rejoined the Army where he carried out various hierarchical tasks culminating in his career as director of the National Military College.
