Its author, the military man José Ignacio Garmendia (1841 – 1925), had a long career in the field of arms, participating in the entire episode of the Paraguayan War, except for an interregnum around 1869, when attacked by cholera, he had to travel to Buenos Aires, but once he recovered he returned to the battlefields. His military history extended far beyond this conflict, participating in numerous episodes that mark the institutional consolidation of our country. He fought against Urquiza, López Jordan, the pampas caciques Pincén, Coliqueo and Catriel, among others, and accompanied Governor Carlos Tejedor in the movement he led in 1880. Later he joined the forces that made the expedition to the Chaco and from 1890 He held various destinations, as director of the Military College and the War Arsenal. He was a member of the American History and Numismatics Board, and published an important saga of works with high historical value.

In "The portfolio of a soldier", Garmendia exhibits his skills as a writer with an agile and lively pen. Various military episodes and semblances of officers -some, referring to the Paraguayan War-, and customary anecdotes brighten his pages.
