TEXTILES

Huipil of the Mayan culture.

Chichicastenango. K'iché ethnic group. Guatemala. Mid 20th century.

It is a garment of female clothing, with distinctive characteristics for each ethnic group. This huipil has been woven with black cotton yarn, in three cloths, on a four-edge warp-faced. It presents a profuse ornamental design obtained by brocade technique, consisting of introducing complementary threads during the weaving process. This design, with intricate geometric designs, is the best example of the huipiles of Chichicastenango. Each cloth is part of the whole and the aesthetic result is appreciated once the pieces are sewn by simple sewing. Measurements. Total length: 150 cm / 59.05 in. Width: 87 cm / 34.25 in.

It bases its excellent visual result on the wise combination of the different shades of the red range, culminating in the embroidered -with a design representative of the sun's rays- of the central circular opening, edged in corduroy. Since the garment surrounds the neck without a neckline, it has a side opening to allow it to pass over the head.
