Palette whip.
Hallmark: L. Carzolio. Dolores, Buenos Aires Province. Early 20th century.
Typical of these riding crops, with a long, polished wooden body, it is beautifully decorated with silver details, including the distinctive paddle where the leather strap is attached. The maker skillfully achieved a balance between the two materials in the handle, demonstrating excellent silversmithing. It has a silver chain.
Measurements: Body: 39 cm. Total: 91 cm.
Regarding the hallmark “L. Carzolio”—referring to Luis Carzolio, who was active in Dolores—Adolfo Luis Ribera, without providing further information, places it among pieces of Creole silverware from the late 19th or early 20th century. He was also included in the work “Punzones en la platería criolla” (Scarves in Creole Silverwork) at the José Hernández Museum, where he is associated (in Tandil) with Carzolio and Bajardi, whom Ribera presents as Bajardi and Carzoglio (sic), with a watchmaking business in Dolores, Buenos Aires, in 1903. Notes:
1. We confirmed this more than a decade ago at the jewelry store in Dolores that is still operating today, run by the heirs of Don Luis.
