Battle of Balaclava. 1907.
Tempera on paper, signed and dated in the lower right corner.
Dimensions: 16.5 x 27.3 cm. Framed.
An iconic scene from the Crimean War. This is a 1907 recreation of the painting titled "Balaclava" or "The Charge of the Light Brigade," an important work by the British painter John Charlton (1849-1917), from 1889. It depicts the charge of the British cavalry against the Russian artillery positions, a tactical error that resulted in heavy losses and was immortalized by Lord Tennyson's poem. It specifically represents regiments such as the 4th and 13th "Light Dragoons" in the battle fought at Balaclava on October 25, 1854, at the beginning of the Crimean War.
The image circulated in color print at the beginning of the 20th century, which explains this early copy.
