OTHER PHOTOGRAPHIC FINDINGS

Advertising Plows Marty. Buenos Aires. Circa 1890.

Albumen (23.5 x 17 cm / 9.25 x 6.69 in) Mounted on a secondary support (28 x 21.5 cm / 11.02 x 8.46 in), where we read at the bottom of it the following printed text: "El arado Marty es el más perfecto que se conoce hasta hoy / Se construye en los Talleres Argentinos de F. Marty y Cía., calle 89  A N.  232. - Buenos Aires”. On the lower right edge of the image and manuscript in iron gall ink the date: "Year 1894".

Of particular interest in the field of photographic research is the use of early images as a vehicle for publicity, as in the present case. Traders and manufacturers quickly saw the effectiveness of this new technology to promote their products and increase sales. Such is the case of the Argentine firm F. Marty & Co, which specially hired a professional photographer to document "in situ" the work of a plow of its manufacture.

The "Aratrum" -such as its Latin name- was an indispensable farming tool since ancient times and had a fundamental role in the Argentine economic rise, whose wheat and other cereal exports positioned our country as the "granary of the world”. Beautiful rural view of a strong plow drawn by his four horses.
