Poncho Bolívar. Bolivia, mid-20th century.

Exceptional poncho woven as a trousseau garment on a stake loom, on a four-selved warp face, with high mountain alpaca fiber filature, dyed with indigo, cochineal and rosewood. Measures. Length: 1.86 m / 73.22 in. Width 1.42 m / 55.9 in.

It comes from the area called Bolívar, but although the province of Bolívar belongs to the department of Cochabamba, the town of Bolívar -formerly called Quirquiavi- rides on three departments: the aforementioned, plus Oruro and Potosí, and constitutes a special textile style and different from the fabrics of the aforementioned departments. In this case, it is a piece of notable quality in terms of its design, with the streets of smartness and labor, making a frame for the labor streets decorated with baroque designs, in its two panels of mirror symmetry. In the ensemble, the central street stands out, ten centimeters wide, woven separately, forming the mouth by weaving with discontinuous wefts. This lane, like those of the lateral fields, is woven with a complementary tubular warp technique, the same one used for weaving the pampas strips.
