We are looking at the chronicle of the first trip made by James Cook between the years 1768 - 1771, aboard the HMB Endeavor, around the globe. At the end of that journey and after an unauthorized edition, the English commissioned the jurist John Hawkesworth to write it, for which he drew on the logbooks of that journey, enriched by the travels of Commodore Byron, and Captains Carteret and Wallis. That first official chronicle was translated into French in the edition that we present here.

It advanced on the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia, crossed the Pacific and, among other points, visited Easter Island.

This is the third journey traced by James Cook between 1776 and 1780, after the search for the mythical Northwest Passage. Translated from the English version -of the first in its original language, published in 1784-, the one we offer is distinguished by its engravings and maps, including the death of the Grand Admiral, suffered in a minor clash with local residents of the Sandwich Islands, in present-day Hawaiian archipelago, who stabbed him.

The travels of the English Admiral James Cook (1728 - 1779) deserve a privileged place in every American library. An audacious explorer, cartographer, and navigator like few others, Cook commanded three expeditions under the English flag. He sighted new lands, documented landforms and localized populations in a firm decision by the British crown ready to rule the world through all its overseas possessions.

Notes:

1. In the early twentieth century, Eduardo Obejero Urquiza began to build his exceptional travelers library, which was dispersed in numerous local auctions and even at Casa Christie's. Cook's travel collection was one of his most precious treasures with its plates and maps, including that of the Patagones. SEH-IX
