This print is part of the album edited in Paris by Aubert & Cie -and lithographed by Compte- with the title "Galerie Royale de Costumes", which included a portrait of the author and eleven lithographs with the full-length portraits that D'Hastrel he raised during his stay in our region, including gaucho-soldiers, ladies of society and countrymen; among them, General Juan Galo Lavalle, and the spouses Gervasio Antonio de Posadas (son) and Clemencita Estévez.

The artist staged a scene in his creation; leaning on a short palisade, the countrywoman is shown with a calabash mate with tail and light bulb in her left hand; while with his right at her waist he holds a harness that runs up her skirt. On her head, she wears a top hat and around her shoulders, a shawl with fringes.

D'Hastrel (1805 - 1875), baron of Rivedoux, set sail in January 1839 from the port of Le Havre bound for the Río de la Plata and shortly after arriving he was appointed, first, assistant to Admiral Le Blanc, and later commander of Martín García Island, a strategic point for blocking the Río de la Plata. In the hours that he spent in these lands, he produced numerous sketches, drawings and paintings with the themes that most captivated him: local characters and views of Montevideo, Colonia, Isla Martín García and even a few of Buenos Aires. In November 1840 he left Montevideo for Rio de Janeiro. In 1847 he retired from the Gallic navy and made other voyages. His works were transferred to lithographic plates forming numerous albums that achieved resounding success. Among them, two dedicated to our region: the so-called "Galerie Royale de Costumes" and the "Silver Album or Collection of views and customs of this part of South America", made up of twelve lithographs.
