IN THE YEAR OF BENEDETTI, STORIES OF HIS RETURN

Mario Benedetti. Montevideo. 1996.

Portfolio with 6 vintage silver gelatin photographs, measures: 18 x 24 cm (7.08 x 9.44 in), each signed and numbered by the author: 3/10. The images are accompanied by a handwritten text alluding to this work born from an intense relationship that, the fruit of a journalistic encounter, was forged between the photographer and the great Latin American writer. All of them are part of the book "Poemas revelados" (a copy of it is attached).

Mario Benedetti (1920 - 2009) built an important literary work -poet and novelist, dabbled in essays, short stories and journalism- that deserved awards and other international recognition. He said about Longoni: "The exciting experience I have lived with Eduardo Longoni and the intuitive and revealing spirit he transmits to his camera, has helped me, among other things, to recover prints from my past, stickers from my neighborhoods, streets from my modest biography, illustrations of a remote and also current city, which is endearing to me and that had been somewhat blurred in my memory after twelve murky and cloudy years of exile”. In Longoni's testimonial account that makes up this portfolio, we read: "I met Mario Benedetti at the old Seix Barral publishing house, I wanted to propose to him to make a photo book in which he could portray him in his beloved city of Montevideo. He had recently returned to the Río de la Plata (...)

He accepted my proposal. I crossed the brown river more than a dozen times and we went for a walk through the places of its history. We rediscovered Montevideo together, me at his side and he fighting with the changes that surprised him at every corner”. As a result of this mutual collaboration, two books were born, “Poemas revelados”, edited by Losada-Océano, and “Utopías en foco” published by Losada.

Photographer and teacher, Eduardo Longoni (Buenos Aires, 1959), photojournalist, has participated in individual and group exhibitions, made numerous photography books, garnered national and international awards, and his shots illustrate books published in various nations. In 2018, he starred in a title published by Fondo de Cultura Económica, the work of Mexican historian Alberto del Castillo Troncoso: “Photography and Memory. Conversations with Eduardo Longoni ”.
