HISTORICAL / MILITARY OBJECTS

Hunting dagger. Dumonthier style. France. Mid 19th century.

Buffalo horn handle, polished, with longitudinal grooves and wavy edges, with a guard and its pommel of fine workmanship, in metal. Its leather scabbard -probably the original one, with traces of use and the passage of time-, has a metal toe cap and scabbard mouth; In the latter, we can see the button for her tahali, the leather strap that crossed in the form of a bandolier from her right shoulder to the left side of her waist, holding her for use at the right time. Without manufacturing marks, although due to its style -similar models manufactured by the Dumonthier house are known- we consider it French. Measures. Blade length: 49.7 cm. Total length: 70.5 cm.

The blade, straight, fine, smooth and double-edged -with a double hollow on each side-, shows some signs of rust.

Hunting or hunting daggers made the hunting team, which had a special carrying permit, just like the nobles. With elegant lines, they had to respond to their functionality, designed to pass through the skin of the captured animal.
